Benedetta's film is based
on a true story. According to her, Benedetta Carlini was a real nun in Pescia,
a small town in northern Italy at the beginning of the 17th century. When the
Papacy found out about her relationship with one of her nuns while she was
Abbess of the Convent of the Mother of God, she is stripped of her office and
imprisoned. She had visions and even received the stigmata, according to her.
She claimed in 1619 that she was visited by Jesus, who told her that she was to
marry him. People began to doubt Benedetta's claims, and the investigation that
followed uncovered the unlawful relationship.
when the film begins
Virginie Efira is courageous in her role as Benedetta, who is first presented
as a little girl being sold to a convent run by an abbess portrayed by
Charlotte Rampling. Her body was
property even as a child, and she bargained with the monastery for the best
price. "Benedetta" then skips forward 18 years, to the point where
the main character begins to see visions of Jesus. Bartolomea, a young woman,
seeks safety in the convent from her abusive father. Benedetta is in charge of
integrating Bartolomea, who is poor and uneducated, into the convent's life.
Bartolomea tells Benedetta that her father and brothers sexually abused her.
Bartolomea kissed Benedetta that night. Benedetta advises Bartolomea that the
Abbess and her daughter, Sister Cristina, should be careful.
Benedetta begins to have
visions of Jesus calling her to join him and save her from danger. Benedetta
develops a serious illness after a particularly fraught vision. Abbess Felicita
entrusts her medical services to Bartolomea. Benedetta recovers her health and
begins to teach the illiterate Bartolomea to read and write. Benedetta sees
Christ hanging from the cross. He tells her to undress and touch her hands. The
next morning, Benedetta wakes up with symptoms in her hands and feet. After An
investigation has started. As people rush to check on her, she begins speaking
in a male voice, chastising those who disbelieve her. Her forehead is now
swollen and bleeding. Christina sees a shard of broken glass on the floor and
informs her mother that she believes Benedetta inflicted the wounds herself. Benedetta
is raised to the rank of abbess in place of Felicita at this time. Christina
communicates her displeasure about this. Benedetta and Bartolomea have sexually
in Felicita's old rooms. Using one end of a small wooden statue of the Virgin
Mary that Benedetta had brought to the convent as a child, Bartolomea cuts a
sex toy for her. Through a peephole in their chambers, Felicita sees Benedetta
and Bartolomea having a sexual relationship.
A comet passes over the
convent, which many people believe is a warning of a coming disaster. As the
plague spreads across the countryside, Benedetta has a vision that Pescia will
be spared and orders the abbey to be shuttered to prevent the infection.
Felicita slips away and goes to see the local Nuncio, where she tells him about
Benedetta's sexual indiscretions. As the plague worsens, Felicita returns to
the abbey with the Nuncio. He establishes a court of inquiry to investigate
Benedetta's actions. When questioned, Bartolomea denies having sex with
Benedetta, claiming that she loves her other sisters just as much. The Nuncio's
men torture Barolomea until she confesses to her sexual activities and brings
the nuncio with the wooden dildo, who is behind a book in Benedetta's room. He
has Benedetta arrested, but she returns to a male voice and attacks those who persecuted
her, claiming that the nuncio will soon fall ill. The day has come for
Benedetta's execution. The Nuncio is warned that the people of Pescia will not
allow Benedetta's execution, but he goes forward. When the nuncio's men begin
to burn Benedetta at the stake, they are attacked by the public. Untying
Benedetta, Bartolomea discovers a bloody potsherd at her feet. A mob attacks
and kills the Nuncio as he runs for safety. In an abandoned stable outside of
town, Benedetta and Bartolomea awoke, having spent the night together.
Insisting that the people need her, Benedetta heads off towards Pescia again.
